Why today?

Following yesterday's remembrance of Delkash, today's choice changes the atmosphere of the series. Medad Rangi represents the brighter, romantic side of Persian pop. Instead of separation and sorrow, it concentrates on colour, imagery and admiration of the beloved.

A look at the work

Medad Rangi does not tell a complete story. Instead, Bijan Samandar builds a portrait of the beloved through a succession of comparisons. Eyes, lips, stature and gaze are described through familiar images from Persian love poetry, while the coloured pencil at the centre of the song gives it a more modern, everyday quality.

The central idea is simple: even with every colour at the narrator's disposal, the beloved's beauty cannot be recreated. This romantic exaggeration gives the poem a clear structure, with each comparison adding detail to the portrait.

The music gives greater depth to this light, romantic setting. The piece has a steady four-beat metre and a tonal centre close to G minor. That minor setting leaves a little gravity and emotional weight beneath its warm, intimate surface, preventing the song from sounding overly sweet or simple.

Siavash Ghomayshi's melody consists of clear, memorable phrases. Nasser Cheshmazar's arrangement gradually expands around Ebi's voice with keyboards, strings, guitar and the rhythm section. Ebi begins relatively gently, then gives important phrases greater emphasis and length as the song progresses.

There is also a subtle interaction between voice and instruments. The structure is not strictly call-and-response, but instrumental phrases often continue or complete the feeling of the preceding vocal line.

Medad Rangi works by balancing several elements: fluid, accessible pop; imagery rooted in Persian poetry; a memorable melody; and a minor-key setting that gives a simple romantic idea more musical depth.
